The Catskills and NYC
Earlier this month, we adventured over the Atlantic to New York City, and set out on a little road trip up to the Catskills region.
With a weeks holiday booked, we split the time between the mountainous Upstate region, and the big city. Of course, we decided to Airbnb it, which yet again provided the goods!
We took a midday flight from Manchester to JFK, landing in the States late afternoon. From the airport, my amazing (unflappable) partner drove us up to Saugerties in our rental car. Exhausted, we crashed out ready for a few days exploring.
I would highly recommend Saugerties and the little flat we stayed in. We ventured to pretty much all the towns in the surrounding area, and of them all Saugerties and Woodstock were the top choices.
Day one was spent walking, climbing to the lookout point on Overlook Mountain, and exploring the steep ascent to Kaaterskill Falls. We hit things at just the right time, only just defrosted enough to climb safely, but still impressively frozen.
After knackering ourselves on day one, we spent the next day exploring the small towns and Hudson. Now, I loved the architecture and feel of Hudson, but it is possibly somewhere best explored on a weekend. Many of the shops were still running on Winter hours, or only opened on weekends to take advantage of City explorers. It did mean we got the town pretty much to ourselves though. This town does feel very 'money', and after a morning of wandering around insanely expensive antique stores, we were ready for the more down to earth vibe of Woodstock.
On Friday, we set off back to the city, stopping off for another hike at Bear Mountain. We arrived in NY by mid afternoon, checking into our Brooklyn apartment. Again, I would recommend the Airbnb, although the contrast between peaceful, homely Saugerties and the non stop city left us missing the quirky Upstate region.
New York on a whole didn't disappoint (how could it), but we both found the more low key vibe off Manhattan was way better suited to us. My personal highlight was a sunny walk through Prospect Park and an afternoon at Smorgasburg street food gathering.
Throughout the trip, I cannot fault the food we found. We didn't pay for a bad meal and came back raving about the selection on offer. Highlights were Bread Alone in Woodstock, and Allswell in Williamsburg.
The trip was amazing and exhausting, 100% worth the money and I loved the combination of rural escape and city energy.
